Langdon Park Secondary School

Client: London Borough of Tower Hamlets
In Association with education and Building Services Department

Date: 1990

A new science block providing language classrooms and science laboratories for Langdon Park Secondary School for London Borough of Tower Hamlets Education Department.

Working with the Borough's architects department, the project is part of a three-phase refurbishment and extension to the existing school. The proposed new block creates a courtyard with the existing Edwardian and 1960s blocks.

The layout of the block is influenced by the site geometry and the existing view of the park. The functions are expressed both in terms of their technical and social nature. The contrasting material of brick and render relates to the brickwork of the listed Edwardian building, while the large curtain wall-type glazing relates to the 1960s block. The double-height space celebrates the connection between the new built and the 1960s block. The elevation and the roof are designed to offer maximum light to classrooms and the science labs.
